Our Small Nursery Tour

The time has come to show you all our little nursery we’ve been putting together over the past couple months for this little cub. We’re not moving into our new place until the new year so we have had to work with the space we currently have to prepare for his arrival. We currently live in an open-plan studio annex above Bradley’s parents house. Its basically one huge room with a bedroom and kitchen in, and a lovely little on-suite. So we’ve made one corner especially for him and his little (well, not so little, babies have a LOT of stuff) things to live in.

It’s pretty neutral, with a few pops of rainbow-like colour. Our bedroom itself was already a shade of duck-egg type-blue, which I guess suits in well with that fact that we’re having a boy. My mum bought us these lovely draws from Ikea to store babies belongings. Originally it came with black handles, but I decided to vamp them up a little with some crystal knobs instead.

On top of the draws we have two little baskets, one to keep changing essentials in like nappies, wipes, nappy cream and hand sanitiser. The other basket has newborn-type toys in, like little comforters and rattles that he might enjoy through the first few months. Baskets like these are so handy to keep little bits in which you will need easy and quick access to without rummaging through draws.

In the top draw we have some stacks of newborn size one nappies already opened out the box, again for easy access mid-change, which we can just top up when needed from the massive stock pile we have somehow created over time. This is also where we store muslin cloths and some extra packs of wipes. In our draw divider which is also from Ikea we have a range of small-clothing-accessories, including hats, bibs, socks, swaddles and mittens. This divider just makes it so much simpler to keep things together and neat.

In the middle draw is where we’re keeping the majority of his clothes (as you can see, we have a SHIT TONNE!). Everything is size-categorised so it makes it trouble-free for myself and Bradley whilst dressing him. We have 0-3 month vests in the front divider and then 3-6 months in the back. We currently only have a very small amount of ‘newborn’ vests because we were originally told by doctors that he would be a large baby, so we didn’t bother buying many. Although now we know that he just under average size so no doubt he’ll be drowning in his 0-3 month ones now.

We’re not fan’s of the typical ‘baby-boy-blue’ so most of the clothing is neutral toned with a few splashes of colour. I personally love baby boys in red and/or stripes! We then have his little folded piles of tops and bottoms again in size order. I absolutely love the little bottoms with a bear face on the bum from M&S. I am completely in love with M&S’s baby boy range because they have so much more than a sea of sickening baby boy blue.

We have a tiny selection of Christmas clothing ready for him just incase he has his first Christmas this year. It’s in its own separate pile at the back, to be or not to be put into our hospital bag depending on which date this little cub decides to arrive. It’s only a couple of pieces so I’m not too fussed if he doesn’t get to wear them. Although my Nana knitted the Christmas pudding hat which I ADORE. I plan on adding ribbon to it and having it as a memorable Christmas tree decoration for future Christmas’s though.

The last draw has all his sleep suits, blankets and clean towels in. Again the sleep suits are in size order because nothing would be worse than searching for the size tag every 5 minutes after an explosive poop. I am obsessed with the brightly coloured ones from Boots of the taxi’s and the fire engines. I personally feel like there isn’t much variety in patterns etc for boys clothing than there is for girls, unless I’m just looking in all the wrong shops!

Our cot is the Petite Compact Cot from Mamas and Papas, we decided on this cot because it was such a space saver compared to normal sized cots or cot beds. It also has two heights which are easily adjustable and Mamas and Papas have a perfectly fitting mattress for this size too. The only downfall is that you can’t get fitted sheets for this size. So I’ve had to buy flat-sheets and tuck them under instead but that isn’t too much of a big deal, it just means I can’t get pretty looking sheets just plain white.

Our floating shelves which we’ve actually had up for years are from Argos and are total bargain. I’ve just styled them up with cub’s little belongings, a few baby books and gifts we received for him from our Baby Shower. I’m sure over time the shelves will just become a huge messy pile of items but for now I like just staring up at everything and keeping it neat whilst I’m in this ‘nesting’ period.

I can just imagine little one asleep in this cot whilst myself and Bradley tip-toe around the room trying to get ourselves sorted (or probably sleeping ourselves in the first few weeks!). My friend Hanna made the large black and white dream catcher for us, I wanted something to go over his cot but I’m not a fan of traditional cot mobiles and this was utterly perfect for us. She makes them by hand and they are completely personalise-able in any colours/styles/lengths you wish. Have a look at her Instagram to see more and order yourselves one.

So that concludes our small nursery tour, if there is anything you’ve seen in the images that you’d like more information on just pop a comment below or Tweet me at @caitylis.  I’m really pleased how cub’s little area has turned out especially with the limited space we are dealing with. We never really set on a ‘theme’ since we knew we’d be moving not long after his arrival, but we seemed to have found ourselves going down the ‘rainbow’ approach.

Now we wait for little cubs arrival. Nursery ready, hospital bags packed and car seat installed. Five weeks until our due date, five weeks to get mentally prepared for the arrival of our first born. We are beyond eager to meet him now.
