Why Comparing Yourself to Others is Damaging

Admiring someone’s beauty without questioning your own is a tremendously difficult skill to learn. We are constantly surrounded by perfected versions of people’s lives. You will rarely see a ‘bad’ post on Facebook/Twitter/Instagram, nobody wants the world to know that they’ve just fallen out with their partner or that they are completely spent up. People generally only post about the positive things going on in their lives.

This means on our low days we are still seeing the ‘perfected’ life of others online. Each post is another stab right through your heart. This is why generally you will notice I that I am rarely on Facebook. I usually deactivate it for long periods of time when I just want to ignore what the rest of the world is doing.

Comparing yourself to others helps you in no way possible. You seem to forget that you are your own person, built up completely different from every single human being on this planet. Doesn’t that make you feel special? Unique? Of course not, knowing that you are one out of 7.4 billion does not give you that ‘special’ feeling.

Yes, you are born unique, you look unique and you are made up of your own unique set of DNA, but does it make you feel any different? Not really.

You need to come to the realisation that you can never become someone else. Admiring others is a great source of inspiration but you should never set out a goal to be like someone else. So many young people nowadays wish they had the perfect body like so and so and it’s very upsetting to see. Finding your own path in life is incredibly important, and you’ve got to work at it to make it happen. Think of all the successful people you know, they’re not the same in any shape or form. Which proves you do not need to follow someone else’s path to reach your goal.

Finding and creating your own successes in life will be much more rewarding than trying to become somebody you’re not. Be happy with yourself and the life you’ve been given and create a life that you know is worth living.

Set some goals. Stay quiet about them. Smash the shit out of them. Clap for your own damn self.
